Matrix Method

Johnson Health Tech’s Sprint 8 workout was redesigned to become a more immersive and engaging experience. As JHT’s sole UX designer, I had full control over the design process, from concept to animated prototype.

Background

Method was originally pitched as a beginner’s 5k program, with room to become a hub for other race training modules. Running-themed training for treadmills, cyclist-themed training for bikes, and so on. We teamed up with well-known marathon runner & coach, Rick Muhr, who would help us build the foundation of the program. Coach Rick is an incredibly kind person, with immense knowledge on how a program like this should be structured and what potential athletes want the most.

Due to Rick’s standing as a high-level marathon coach, I was nervous that his workouts might be too intense for a beginner, so I interviewed veteran 5k runners, the occasional event runners, and wannabe event runners to see if there was anything else that would be beneficial to include in the program. We would return to these users for future testing feedback.

The premise:

An app that takes a user through 8 weeks of training. Three days are done on the treadmill, while 4 days are either for resting or doing another type of workout. The user takes an assessment in the beginning, the machine determines what their 5k pace will be and the program will be tailored to them, gradually increasing intensity throughout the weeks. The 5k program will be one of many training programs in the Matrix Method lineup. This will only exist on Matrix cardio consoles, starting with retail.

I faced two major challenges...

  1. Training for a 5k race is not just a one-and-done experience. We must incentivize users to keep coming back to our program for at least 3 times a week, over the course of 8 weeks.
    1. Not to mention, the user must return to their cardio machine (not something as accessible as their mobile device).
  2. During this time, introducing any new colors and/or themes to our cardio consoles was extremely difficult to do. The current interface designs were visually outdated (which would be redesigned in the years to come).
    1. To keep users interested in a program like this, it needed to be visually engaging. More color, less grayscale… it needs to STAND OUT.

Solutions

  • In the future, it would be nice to have some sort of Matrix or Method-specific mobile app that alerts them when to come back. This, of course, is outside of the project’s intended scope…

  • The program must be a fun and rewarding experience. Think of Duolingo, taking a tedious task, like learning a language, and attempting to have it be a fun experience through gamification… maybe we could bring some of those elements here.

  • Sprint 8, another JHT cardio program, has the highest traffic of any other existing programs on our console, according to analytics. Sprint 8 has a very unique and vibrant color palette. I set out to interview current Sprint 8 users & dig through its online community to understand why this is the case. It turned out that the program’s colorful palette played a huge role. It was something different from the rest of the console, which is what drew many users in.
